Syrah 2015

75cl Domaine la Croix Belle Syrah France > Languedoc Spicy, robust and punchy
Though unoaked, it exhibits such depth of fruit and toasty hints it appears to have enjoyed a period in expensive barrels! Youthful vibrant purple, classic Syrah palate, so perfumed, with a subtle undertone of black olives. Lovely silky texture. This is a classy little number. Would be delicious with that Soupe au Pistou we saw Floyd making on the travel channel last night.

Jacques and Francoise Boyer took over this 17th century estate in 1977 with the goal of producing super-premium wine. The winery is based at Puissalicon, which is situated on a hill between the Cevennes mountains and the Mediterranean, north-east of Beziers and north-west of Pézenas. On taking over the property, the Boyers began substituting the older varietals with more “prestigious” and diverse vines. Situated in the Cotes de Thongue, they set themselves a target of producing the regions finest wines. To achieve this, they produce all wines from a yield of 40hl/h, much lower than is normal in the zone. This is done to preserve the balance in the soil and the vines, to prevent the exhaustion of minerals and water and to produce healthy and flavour-rich grapes. Cotes du Thongue is recognised as one of the finest sources of Vins de Pays D’Oc. Indeed, some 20 years ago Hugh Johnson wrote “if there existed one Vins de Pays of superior quality, it is that of Cotes de Thongue”. In the Wine Report 2008, Domaine la Croix Belle is listed among the top ten of all Vin de Pays producers.
