Chianti Classico Riserva San Marcellino DOCG 2011

75cl Rocca di Montegrossi Sangiovese Italy > Tuscany Something special
95+ points: "Tar, licorice, incense and smoke all burst from the glass in the 2009 Vigneto San Marcellino. A rich, layered wine, the 2009 boasts stunning depth and power from start to finish. I visited the property in 2009 just before the harvest and can attest to the quality of this fruit right off the vine. The 2009 is decidedly dark and brooding. Readers who can cellar the wine for at least a few years will be in for a real treat once it awakens. In 2009, the Vigna San Marcellino is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Pugnitello." The Montegrossi property was once part of the legendary Baron Ricasoli estate. Descendent of the Ricasoli family Marco Ricasoli Fridolfi is the current proprietor. The estate is now considered one of the finest in the zone. Chianti Classico producers are split between those trying to preserve and refine “traditional” Chianti, made only from Sangiovese and other indigenous varieties, and those who are using the maximum permitted proportion of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and ageing in French barriques. Marco falls into the former camp, a purist producing wines with a sense of place but is willing to use touches of barrique or “international” grapes if and when the vintage demands it, and always with restraint and impeccable attention to quality. The wet 2002 demanded some Cabernet and Merlot in the blend and some barrique ageing to give their Chianti Classico some body, but from 2003 onwards, he returned to 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo aged only in large oak vats.
