Soave Classico, La Frosca 2006

75cl Gini Garganega Italy > Veneto Something special
Soave La Frosca is as intense, flavoursome and as sophisticated as Soave gets. Produced from a single Garganega vineyard planted 65 years ago. One third of the wine undergoes oak fermentation, which gives the wine a beautifully silky texture. It has intense fruit flavours ranging from apricot, peach and baked apple with strong minerality and a very long, excellent finish. Serious stuff.

The Gini family are long-time owners of vineyards in two classico crus of Soave, La Frosca and Col Foscarin, The steep vineyard sites are a good vantage point to view the extensive planting on the less favourable flatlands below where much of the inexpensive non-classico Soave is produced. The wines, produced exclusively from 100% Garganega, really show the potential that this region has to produce stylish, complex and long-lived white wines, which are among Italy’s best. We had the pleasure of discovering for ourselves the longevity of these wines over lunch with Claudio in Soave, when he produced bottles of La Frosca 1990 and 1997. They were a revelation, the 1990 in particular still showing amazing fruit, purity and concentration.
