Meruge Tinto 2012

75cl Lavradores de Feitoria Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Barroca, Touriga Francesa Portugal > Douro Something special
Top of the range is Meruge Tinto, a Burgundian style wine made only in the best years from 80% Tinta Roriz and 80% 60 year old vines. Beautiful aromas are ripe, fresh with concentrated red fruits, some chocolate, coffee and oak spiciness. The tannins are soft and smooth; a very elegant wine, yet rich and fruity at the same time.

Lavradores de Feitoria is a very interesting project that began in 2000. It is a joint venture between 15 owners of some of the best vineyards and quintas in the Douro Valley, with a clear and strong commitment to quality.

Two distinct ranges of wines are produced under the Lavradores label, Firstly, single quinta wines, made from one single estate. Not all Quintas produce their own wine, but only four or five, chosen by a tasting panel (Dirk Niepoort is involved here), these wines being produced when a particular Quinta performs particularly well in that vintage. These wines are generally some of the Douro’s finest and are complex, structured wines with a capacity for ageing.

Secondly, blends are produced by a strict selection of grapes from different Quintas under the “Douro” and “Tres Bagos” labels, these wines are showing a typical Douro character in an approachable, ready-to-drink style.

The style of wine produced, right through the range, is all about elegance and balance. A common trait is freshness, drinkability and an ability to combine with food.
