Spiga Ribera del Duero 2009

75cl Bodegas y Vinedos Ortega Fournier Tempranillo Spain > Spiga Rich, full-bodied, elegant and complex
"Full-bodied with intense ultra-smooth dark fruits and plenty of structure. There are some dry tannins on the lengthy finish. A very impressive wine to partner with robust lamb dishes. O. Fournier is a unique company. Founded by José Manuel Fournier in 2000, it has wineries in Spain (Ribera del Duero), Chile (Maule & San Antonio) and Argentina (Uco Valley). All produce very high-quality wines. They have a different winemaker for each country, with one overseeing the entire operation. There is a distinct house style – I would say smooth and concentrated with clean ripe fruits. Well-made, very seductive wines." John Wilson - Wilson on Wine

The world class production team of Bodegas y Vinedos O Fournier from Chile and Argentina (see page 47) have their third estate in Spain growing a mere 60 hectares of vines. The philosophy here is the same as their new world wineries: to produce the highest quality wine. The estate was planted between 22 and 55 years ago with the main variety being Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo) and one hectare of Merlot. The soils are mostly pebblestone coming from the nearby Duero River, which allows for greater maturity of the grapes through heat radiation at night. Combine this with soil that is poor in organic material but with excellent drainage and the groundwork is set by the location. Vineyard practices such as high plant density and vigorous pruning means yields are always low and quality is assured.
